October 2 Depart Detroit for Boston. Transfer to your hotel where your Tour Director will be on hand to greet you. At 6pm, gather at the hotel with fellow travelers for a welcome reception. Hotel: Omni Parker House
October 3 Boston-Maine Coast-Bar Harbor (2 nights) Begin your journey through the vibrant colors of a New England autumn with a trip up the coast to Maine. Pass by old whaling villages dotted with lighthouses and widows’ walks, the playgrounds of New England’s rich and famous, and rocky beaches pounded by the Atlantic on our way to Bar Harbor on Maine’s Mount Desert Island. Once home to the largest hotel in North America, Bar Harbor also played host to the grand summer homes of the American aristocracy, including the Rockefellers, the Vanderbilts, and Astors. October 4 Acadia National Park Excursion and Bar Harbor Free Time At 1,523 feet, Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park is the first spot in the US where you can see the sunrise. Although you may not get up that early, you will still have plenty of time to admire the view from the peak and then descend to discover the natural riches of New England’s only national park. Marvel at granite cliffs overlooking dramatic, windswept beaches, graceful stone bridges arcing over rushing streams, and stands of ancient maples. Enjoy an afternoon at leisure back in Bar Harbor or take an optional cruise on Frenchman Bay.
October 5 Bar Harbor-Pinkham Notch-North Conway Bid farewell to the coast and travel over rolling hills ablaze with color on your way to the wooded valley of Pinkham Notch, formed during the last ice age as glaciers scoured the earth. Take a ride on a gondola up to the top of Wildcat Mountain for stunning views of Mount Washington and the White Mountains. Late this afternoon arrive in the pretty town of North Conway on the edge of the White Mountain National Forest. After dinner, get acquainted with the local flora and fauna during an engaging talk by a local expert. Hotel: Red Jacket Mountain View Resort
October 6 North Conway-Ludlow (2 nights) Traverse the White Mountains today. As you make your way through forests of sugar maple, mountain ash, and white birch, keep your eyes open for native black bear, moose, deer and dozens of species of birds that call this area home. Crossing into Vermont, spot the traditional wooden covered bridges, thick forests, and rolling fields of the Green Mountain State. Stop at a historic woolen mill that now houses the Simon Pearce glassblowing workshop. Enjoy a Be My Guest Lunch featuring local ingredients delicately arranged on Simon Pearce’s beautiful stem and flatware. Later, delve into the art and science of glassblowing before continuing to the picturesque village of Ludlow and your mountain retreat. Hotel: Jackson Gore Inn
October 7 Woodstock Excursion Enjoy a day on the back roads of Vermont. Get a glimpse of agricultural life at the Billings Farm and Museum, a lovely estate that’s home to one of Vermont’s finest dairy producers. Woodstock has been called “the prettiest small town in America”. Savor a leisurely stroll around the beautiful village green, see an old-fashioned covered bridge or check out some of the local art galleries. Continue your journey through rural Vermont with a visit to Plymouth and the childhood home of Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President of the United States. Enjoy the rest of your afternoon at leisure in Ludlow.
October 8 Ludlow-Springfield From the Green Mountains, cross back into Massachusetts and the gorgeous Berkshires. Stop in Stockbridge to visit the Norman Rockwell Museum and learn about this beloved artist and his iconic paintings of small town Americana. Continue to Springfield. This evening, join your Tour Director and friends for a festive Farewell Dinner. Hotel: Sheraton Springfield Monarch Place
October 9 Springfield-Lexington-Concord- Depart Boston for Home Travel east to see the birthplace of the American Revolution and the “shot heard round the world” as made famous in Ralph Waldo Emerson’s “Concord Hymn”. The battles of Lexington and Concord were the first skirmishes in the American war for independence and these small towns are still rich in history. See the famous statue of the Minute Man, adjacent to Concord’s historic North Bridge. Stop at Lexington Green and then it’s back to Boston where you are transferred to the airport for your trip home. Day 1 Depart USA Overnight flight to London
Day 2 Arrive London After checking into your hotel, the rest of your day is at leisure.
Day 3 London-Stratford-Coventry-York Your Tour Director will greet you with a warm welcome as you drive through the rolling Cotswolds Hills to Stratford-upon-Avon. Here visit Shakespeare’s birthplace and see Anne Hathaway’s cottage. Continue to Coventry where you view the two Cathedrals-one was bombed into a ruin during the Second World War and the other has risen from its ashes. You will also see the statue of Lady Godiva-said to have ridden naked through the streets of the city! Then travel on to Viking York. Here enjoy a walking tour of the city highlighting the ancient walls, the Mansion House, the picturesque Shambles, and the magnificent York Minster. Finally, arrive at your hotel in York where you will enjoy a welcome drink and dinner with your Tour Director and fellow travelers.
Day 4 York-Durham-Edinburgh This morning it’s off to Durham which is dominated by its 11th century Norman Cathedral. See the Castle overlooking Palace Green and other fine buildings surrounded by the picturesque River Wear. The stop to take pictures of a section of the Roman construction known as Hadrian’s Wall before driving through Northumberland National Park. Cross the Scottish border at Carter Bar for spectacular views. Pause to view the ruins of Jedburgh Abbey before arriving in Edinburgh, Scotland’s elegant capital.
Day 5 Edinburgh Sightseeing and at Leisure Many fascinating highlights are included this morning on your sightseeing tour with a local expert guide. The Royal Mile, views of Holyrood House, Arthur’s Seat, Princes Street, the Scottish Parliament and a visit to Edinburgh Castle will be included. There is the possibility to visit Rosslyn Chapel located just south of the city this afternoon. Rosslyn retains an aura of mystery with its many references to the Knights Templar and Freemasonry-but more recently an important feature of the DaVinci Code. This evening you will attend the spectacular Edinburgh Tattoo.
Day 6 Edinburgh-St. Andrews-Scottish Highlands After breakfast today, drive across the Forth Bridge to the famous golf course at St. Andrews on the Fife coast where you stop to take a picture at the 18th hole! Next, travel to the Scottish Highlands and over the River Tay to visit the charming Pitlochry village, renowned for its salmon. Tonight enjoy a traditional Scottish Highlands Highlight Dinner including the ceremony of ‘piping in the haggis’, a unique Scottish tradition.
Day 7 Scottish Highlands-Culloden-Loch Ness-Glasgow This morning drive to Culloden Moor where Bonnie Prince Charles was defeated by the redcoats. Visit the famous battlefield before continuing to Loch Ness. Keep your eyes open for the monster when you stop to take pictures from the shores! Continue to Ft. William where you will see Ben Nevis-Britain’s highest mountain-before driving on to Glencoe. Finally, reach Loch Lomond en route to Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow-once one of the most important shipbuilding cities in the world.
Day 8 Glasgow-Grasmere-Manchester After an orientation tour of Glasgow featuring George Square, drive through the Southern Uplands to Gretna Green. Here eloping couples married against their parents’ wishes. Now travel through the English Lake District to Grasmere where the great English poet, William Wordsworth, lived and wrote his most well-known poem, ‘The Daffodils’. You will see his grave in the churchyard of St. Oswald’s Church. Then drive to spectacular Lake Windermere, the largest natural lake in England. Late, check into your hotel in Manchester.
Day 9 Manchester-Lake District-Chester-Tintern-Bristol This morning after breakfast, your first stop will be Chester where your walking tour will take in the Roman Walls, the Cathedral, and the black and white Tudor arcaded buildings known as the ‘Rows’. From here cross into Wales and the Wye Valley to view the ruins of the 12th century Tintern Abbey, which was the second Cistercian foundation in Britain and the first in Wales. It is one of the most spectular ruins in the country and inspired the Wordsworth poem, ‘Tintern Abbey’ and more that one painting by the great British painter, JMW Turner. It is here that you will all enjoy a special Be My Guest farewell luncheon. Finally, arrive in Bristol, the city associated with the extraordinary engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. This evening will be completely at leisure.
Day 10 Bristol-Bath-Stonehenge-Salisbury-London Make your way to the beautiful city of Bath this morning to enjoy the superb Georgian architecture and visit the Roman Baths to test the famous waters. Then cross Salisbury Plain to see the mysterious and imposing monoliths at Stonehenge. Salisbury is where you will have time to admire the Cathedral and its spire-the tallest in Britain! Finally, through Wiltshire and Hampshire and back to London where sadly your tour must come to an end.
Day 11 London-USA Time to bid farewell to London and your new friends.
